In the year of 2023, some young theatre minded boys and girls were approached to make a new drama for their coaching centre’s teachers’ day programme. They have selected to do a famous comedy play written by Anton Chekov, “THE PROPOSAL”. They approached Gourab Mukherjee to direct that drama. Arunima’s Bengali adaptation and everyone’s performance was top notch. Rabindra sadan, almost filled with more than 1000 people and everyone enjoyed it a lot. And the journey begins…

The name “BIRAHATTARA BAHURUPI” is still a confusion for so many audiences. The name is given by Arunima in just 5 minutes before the 2nd show of “THE PROPOSAL”. According to google “বিরহোত্তর” means “answer’ or “reply”. Our ‘বহুরূপী’s are always ready to answer every question on stage by their performance, and our 2nd production Utpal Dutta’s “MEGH”, under the direction of Gourab, is the prominent proof of that. We are known as "আমরা স্টেজে সিনেমা দেখাই"

Kolkata started knowing the name of our group in just 6 months and there comes “BAAKI ITIHAAS”, our milestone. Badal Sircar’s famous drama and Gourab’s brilliant direction and scenography with his fabulous acting skills makes Tapan theatre to hang the HOUSEFULL board at their gate after so many years. A massive success for our group and every actor.

We’ve so many plannings, a bunch of big productions are still yet to come. In the 1st birthday of us we have organised 3 dramas in 1 day in 1 ticket. “EKEI KI BOLE SOVYOTA” written by Michael Madhusudan Dutt. “ROKTOKODOM” written by Manmatha Roy. “MAANVONJON” written by Rabindranath Tagore, dramatized by Gourab Mukherjee.

Director

Gourab Mukherjee, our talented and visionary director, has earned accolades for his exemplary work in theatre. In 2023, he was awarded the prestigious Best Theatre Actor award, a testament to his unmatched acting prowess. Gourab's artistic foundation is solid, with junior and senior diplomas in painting, vocal music, and Rabindra Sangeet, showcasing his multifaceted talents. He also earned the Best Actor award in the Youth Parliament organized by the West Bengal government.

As an advocate for innovative storytelling, Gourab has conducted several workshops focusing on absurd theatre and modern acting techniques, inspiring many to explore unique forms of expression. His acting repertoire spans various plays that align with his deep passion for these genres.

Gourab's journey as a director began with The Zulfiqar (Based on Julias Ceaser), an experimental drama that marked his foray into directing. Since then, he has directed and scenographed several acclaimed productions, including:

• Maanbhonjan by Rabindranath Tagore (dramatized, directed, and scenographed by Gourab Mukherjee).
• Megh by Utpal Dutta (directed by Gourab Mukherjee).
• Baaki Itihaas by Badal Sircar (directed and scenographed by Gourab Mukherjee).
• The Proposal by Anton Chekhov (directed by Gourab Mukherjee).

Additionally, his scenographic work in Raktokadam by Manmatha Roy garnered widespread acclaim, earning multiple awards in 2024, including Best Actor and Best Actress at Naihati.
